Microsoft Certification: The New MCTS Tracks And Exams

Microsoft is revamping its certification tracks, and will eventually retire the familiar MCSE certificatons. The new certification setup is much like Cisco's, where there are specialist certifications to go along with the more general CCNA, then mid-level certifications such as the CCNP, and then a more-advanced practical exam modeled somewhat after the coveted CCIE certification.

Microsoft's new specialist exams are the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) exams. As of March 2006, there were five separate MCTS Tracks. Three of them deal with .NET Framework 2.0; these are the Web Application, Windows Applications, and Distributed Applications certifications. Each of these separate certifications requires the candidate to pass two exams. There is also a one-exam SQL Server 2005 certification, as well as a BizTalk Server 2006 single-exam certification.

The initial question is "Why is Microsoft doing this?" According to their website, MS feels that IT hiring managers today have a tough time deciding which computer certifications best identify job candidates who best meet their needs.

I know it's easy to take verbal shots at Microsoft (it'll be an Olympic sport one day), but this new series of certs does have appeal for hiring managers, which can only help qualified candidates. Instead of the more-general MCSE, which does still suffer from the overcertification of NT 4.0 MCSEs back in the day, these more-specific certifications will make it easier for the job candidate to prove that they can do the job - and easier for the hiring manager to make an informed decision.

Microsoft hasn't announced the track that will eventually replace the MCSE, but this track will be revealed with the next client-server Windows release. It's up to you to stay informed of these changes, so I recommend you visit Microsoft's certification website often. "I didn't know" isn't much help once a certification expires!

How to Choose the Right IT Certification Training

IT training is an important part of your professional formation, offering a range of alternatives in software training, technical training and certification training, that sometimes make it hard to find out which one is the most convenient when it comes to deciding.

Although, any major IT giants have their own certification courses and programs, it is more likely people normally choose Microsoft Certification, the most renown and generalized computer certification, but in your particular case it may not satisfy your IT training needs.

Whichever certification you choose, you always will be totally dependant upon your planned career path or current position, because you cannot simply specialize on Microsoft Windows, Windows Server 2003, or any other products in the Microsoft Windows platform, if your development plans involve only Unix, Solarix or any other platforms.

Of course, it can be useful to have many different certifications, but it is also important to focus your primary attention to your immediate goals. Whether, certification training, software training or technical training, every path has elective exams that help you to pay attention on the skills that are really important to you, or accordingly to your job title.

IT training is the best way to earn certification in fields such as, Network Administrator, Software Engineer, Software Application Developer, Systems Analyst, Database Analyst, IT Business Analyst, Trainer, Technical Consultant, Administrator Web Application Developers Internet Developers, Office Manager, Executive Assistant or Technical Writer.

Sometimes your career path may require extensive knowledge of all technologies, making it very confusing to make a decision for your next career step, particularly when this decision involves 2 different certifications, for example, Microsoft certifications or Cisco certifications or 2 different areas.

There are currently more than 400 certifications available, making it even harder to choose the right IT training, and with more and more created every year, selecting one certification training can be discouraging.

However, if you evaluate your current skills and experience, identifying what it is exactly that you are trying to accomplish, technical training, software training, IT training, etc. the next steps will be easier.

Anne Martinez, author of "Get Certified and Get Ahead" cites; 'certification training listed on your resume demonstrates your ability and your desire to stay current'. If your are still confused, take advantage of the Internet researching a little bit about the different certifications available.

Narrow your scope in order to prepare yourself for a new career, may also improve your opportunities to make the right decision, and once you feel comfortable with the acquired certification, you can always test your skills online or at the same locations where you are taking the IT training.

Requirements of Becoming MCSE Certified

The MCSE certification is one of the most popular certifications in the IT industry. Through this certification, IT professionals gain the ability to work proficiently with Microsoft Windows platforms and carefully configure, install, and maintain Microsoft operating systems. It is an accomplishment that is recognized throughout the IT industry.

In order to earn this certification, candidates are required to pass seven tests, or in other words gain seven different titles. There are four titles which deal specifically with networking; such exams are 70-290, 70-291, 70-293, and 70-294. Through these exams IT professionals and MCSE students will be gain specialized training working with the Windows 2003 Server infrastructure.

The next portion of the core exams required deal specifically with operating systems. Microsoft offers a few different options to students to choose from; however only one is required. Tests 70-270 or 70-210 both deal with installing, configuring, and administering Microsoft operating systems; however 270 deals specifically with XP, while 210 works with Windows 2000.

The last portion of the core examinations focuses around design. Again, Microsoft offers two different options for students to choose from, but only one is required. The first is exam 70-297, which teaches students to design a Microsoft Windows server 2003 active directory. The other choice is exam 70-298, where students work more with designing security for the Windows server 2003 network.

Once the core exams are mastered, Microsoft requires one elective course. There are 17 different elective courses offered by Microsoft which can be selected; however it is only necessary to pass one. Microsoft reports that MCSE electives can also be substituted by other Microsoft certifications, such as MCSA 2000 or MCSE 2000. There are also some third party certifications which can serve this same purpose; however if this is something you are considering, follow up with the Microsoft website to double check.

Earning the MCSE training will require a lot of work; however the benefits will be felt throughout your career as an IT professional. There are many different routes one can take in preparing for the MCSE certification, for example candidates can choose to attend boot camps, distance learning programs, or take a self-paced training program. If the MCSE certification is something which interests you and your career, TestOut has created a MCSE certification course to better prepare students through the use of multimedia technology and simulations. Become MCSA, A+, Server+, or CCNA certified and improve your career. Mike Allen writes about technical training for IT certifications.

Things That You Need To Know About the 70 -290 Certification

The IT industry today is expanding at a rapid rate, and is constantly looking for professionals who have the requisite skills to carry on the work efficiently. This is probably the reason why the selection criteria are becoming stricter, and job selection processes becoming tougher.

In order to give you an edge over the others come the Microsoft Certifications, which are quite reputed all over the world. Three of the main certifications include the Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA) and Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE). Each of these certifications can be attained by passing certain exams associated with these.

The 70- 290 exam is actually a MCSE one, which ensures that you are qualified in the skills of managing and maintaining the 2003 version of Microsoft Windows. It is actually one of the first in the entire series of exams that come under the MCSE certifications. Once you clear this exam, you get a MCP status, with core credits for MCSA and MCSE certifications.

The exam focuses on teaching you all aspects that are attached with the Microsoft Windows 2003 environment. You will learn about the basic configurations and troubleshooting, and will also learn about desktop and security settings. You will also learn about access to resources along with the managing and maintaining of server environments. Most importantly, you will learn about disaster recovery.

The examination pattern for 70- 290 is based on multiple choice questions, and you have to select the ‘best’ answer, out of all the similar responses given as options. The passing score for this exam is 700 from a total of 1000 marks.

MCSE exams are quite challenging, and are not easy to clear. Therefore, it is advisable to prepare well before hand, both theoretically as well as practically.

Get the best PMP certification Training

What is PMP certification and why get it?

PMP stands for Project Management Professional. PMP certification is offered by PMI (Project Management Institute) and those that obtain this certification demonstrate a proficient level of project management leadership skills. PMP certification is widely recognized by major companies and government agencies worldwide as the standard qualification for the role of project managers resulting in certificate holders commanding higher salaries than the others. According to the PMI website, as of July 2008, there are more than a quarter million certified professionals around the world. Many companies require their project managers to hold this certification and is growing in popularity every day.

Ten Steps to get PMP certification

1. Make sure you meet the criteria set by PMI before deciding to apply for the PMP certification.

Eligibility criteria for applying for PMP examination

a. You should have documents to prove that you had at least 35 contact hours of formal education in project management. Read my other hub to know more on how to get the 35 contact hours for applying for PMP certification.

b. If you have a Bachelor's degree, document at least three calendar years experience in project management during which at least 4,500 hours were spent leading and directing project tasks. Note that experience in all the five recognized project management process groups is required. The five process groups are Initiation, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Control and Closing.

If you do not have a Bachelor's degree, applicants must have a minimum five years professional project management experience, during which at least 7,500 hours are spent leading and directing project tasks, within the past eight years from the time of application. Make sure to read the PMP Handbook published by PMI for more details. Note that you will have to provide the contact information of your manager or supervisor. If PMI chooses to audit your application, they will contact your manager for verification.

2. Become a member of the PMI

As of July 2008, the annual membership dues are $129. PMI members get a discount on the PMP examination fee that is bigger than the annual membership fees so it financially make sense to become a PMI member if you are planning to take the PMP exam that year. You may not want to renew it the following year if you decide you don't want it anymore. In addition to the discount, you also get an electronic copy of PMBOK guide (reading this book is essential to prepare well for the exam) and networking opportunities within the PMI community.

Do not forget to check your local PMI chapter. Explore about their activities, courses and meetings and decide if you want to become a member of the local PMI chapter. Some chapters provide PMP preparation courses and seminars which you will find very useful. It is a great opportunity to meet new and experienced PMPs in person and learn from them. You will also meet people who are preparing for the PMP exam and you can form a study group and share knowledge.

3. Apply online for PMP certification at PMI

a. You will be filling in all the details that are mentioned in above steps (1a) and (1b) along with your personal information, educational qualification, etc.

b. PMP Examination fees: $405 for PMI members. $555 for non-members. You can use your credit card to pay for this.

Make sure the application is complete. Do not forget to attach your resume. Once you apply, it may take upto 2 weeks for your application to get approved by PMI. If you apply online, the processing time is only 5 business days.

4. Start preparing for the exam.

Read the PMP Handbook again and understand all the rules. Start reading on the internet about PMP exam, experiences of recent successful PMPs, lessons learnt during the process, etc. Join various forums dedicated to PMP examination on the internet and browse through and ask questions. You can learn a lot from other successful PMPs and those who are in the same boat as you. Refer to the links section below for a list of active PMP forums.

5. Schedule a date for PMP examination:

If your application is approved, instructions will be sent to you from PMI and you can schedule a date for your exam. You may not get a date immediately. So, schedule the exam date well in advance. Once your application is approved, you have one-year eligibility period in which to pass the PMP exam. During this eligibility period, you may take the examination up to three times because candidates may not pass the exam on their first attempt. There is a $150 reexamination fee. If you fail three times in a year, you must wait one year to reapply.

Check these out for more details

6. Exam preparation:

Prepare rigorously for the exam. It may take anywhere from 3 to 6 months on average to prepare for the examination. I know some extreme cases where a person spent just 3 weeks preparing full-time and passed the exam.

Here are some study material that I suggest for PMP preparation and I have given the direct links to their Amazon pages on the right.

The PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) guide. It looks like about 75% of the questions on the PMP exam come from the PMBOK guide. So, make sure you study this guide again and again. However, understand that the PMBOK guide is so dry that it is raw text material only with no interesting examples and is difficult to understand. There are well written books and audio tapes I am listing below to understand the concepts given in the guide in an interesting way.

PMP Audio workshop: If you are commuting a lot or traveling for a long time, audio books are a great way to use the time effectively. Note that some audio workshops also count towards your contact hours (remember you need at least 35 contact hours on training to be eligible for the exam). I suggest PMP Prepcast as it has a lot of positive feedback from many successful PMPs.

Hot Topics Flashcards for Passing the PMP and CAPM Exams (Audio CD) by Rita Mulcahy
The PMP Exam: How to Pass On Your First Try (Test Prep series) by Andy Crowe - Great first book to read to get an idea of the PMP exam.

Rita's Course in a Book for Passing the PMP Exam by Rita Mulcahy

Head First PMP: A Brain-Friendly Guide to Passing PMP Exam by Andrew Stellman and Jennifer Greene

7. Take a lot of model tests.

There are a lot free PMP exam sample questions available on the internet that you should answer. Also, buy some model exams and take them as if they are real exams conducted by PMP. If you get 80% of the question right, you should be ready for the actual PMP exam.

8. Take the exam:

The PMP exam is 4 hours long. Make sure you are fresh and relaxed on the day of the PMP exam. This means that you will need a good night's sleep the previous night. Have a good breakfast and drive to the testing center early. Do not forget to take your ID with you.

Choosing the Best Training Providers Can Give You Quicker Success

If you are in need of more education, choosing training providers who are the best in the field is the best way to get the training you need quickly. Whether you are choosing a training provider for yourself or for a group, you have many choices open to you. There are many colleges, universities and small businesses to choose from. Of course, you will want to do your research to see which ones may be the best training providers for you.

If you are in need of a training course that will require you to be certified after the course, you will need to be sure that the training providers you choose are offering certification that is recognized in your field. It is not worth the time or the money to take a course that is unrecognized because you will not be allowed to work without the certification. You will also want to be sure that your training providers are offering a course that can be transferred to another provider if necessary. Do not waste your money or your time on a fly by night course.

If you are looking for training providers to come to you to train a group, you will need to know what types of tools they will use and how long the course will take. And certainly, check out the references. You will need to know how successful the training providers have been with other groups. Get a sampling of the training course to be sure that the program is covering everything you expect it too. An incomplete training course will be next to worthless if you need to schedule another one in two months for an update, if the material could have been covered in the initial training.

You will also want to consider online training providers. There is a wide range of topics and providers offered on the Internet and there are definite advantages to online courses. For instance, the course can be taken anytime and the student sets the pace. The student has the ability to go over the material as many times as necessary without slowing down a class.

Of course, when choosing online training providers, it is important to note that you would be loosing the classroom environment that can often be more conducive to learning. Allowing a student to work when they want may mean that they are either at home or in a cubicle at work. Watching television or chatting with other employees during the training course may not give the best results. When the student is in a classroom or a training center, they are in a learning mode. A classroom atmosphere allows for other ideas and questions, and the interaction increases the chance of retention. Instructor led courses often allow for more in-depth instruction. Microsoft Certification: Farewell To The MCSE

Microsoft is in the middle of a major push to overhaul its certification program. Last year, they announced the new Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA) certification, which is not a written exam but rather a practical exam that will be graded by a board of examiners. Just applying for the certification will require 10 years' experience in IT as well as three years of practical experience as a network architect.

For those of us not quite ready for that, Microsoft has announced that it's also going to revise other certifications. The MCSE that we've all come to know and love is going to be a thing of the past. In its place will be a series of specialization exams and IP Professional certification tracks.

If you're currently an MCSE certification or working it, don't worry, you have plenty of time to adapt to the new tracks. Microsoft's official word is that the new certification structure will be implemented when the next Windows server/client version is released. For those holding MCDBAs, your current certification will remain valid and you'll have a chance to upgrade to the new certification with SQL Server 2005.

Those of us who have been on the certification track for a while remember the outcry when Microsoft planned to phase out the much-maligned NT 4.0 certification in the move to Windows 2000. There was quite an outcry from many certified individuals who felt MS was being unreasonable in their timetable and planned lack of support for the 4.0 certification. Whether you agree with Microsoft's planned changes, I urge you to visit Microsoft's certification site regularly to keep up with these changes.

Whether you choose to pursue any of these new tracks is your decision, but you owe it to yourself and your career to know about the new tracks. Change is inevitable in IT and the IT certification world, and you must be aware of these changes!

Microsoft has announced major changes to its certification track, including the eventual retirement of the MCSE. Learn about these important details from Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933.

How Does a MCSE Boot Camp Work?

One of the best methods of securing IT training, and preparing for your MCSE Certification examination is the boot camp. MCSE stands for Microsoft Certified System Engineer. The MSCE Certification boot camp gives you the intensive training that you need to not only pass the examination, but also to handle the work afterwards. The boot camp concept takes its name from military basic training and although it does not resemble that in the discipline area, it certainly earns its name for its intensity.

A typical MCSE boot camp lasts around two weeks. The fee for the camp includes air transportation to the camp site, and lodging during the duration of the course. If air transportation and lodging are not needed, these expenses will be deducted from the cost. Meals are also included in these packages. Students will take up to seven certification examinations during the boot camp. The class room work will be directed toward preparation for each examination. Students will be working also on the actual hardware and software under the guidance of instructors who are experience in all Microsoft platforms. Most boot camps have 24/7 lab access available to the students.

There is a great deal of written material and computer training videos involved with the courses designed to prepare for the various Certification examinations. Many companies offer this material to students for home study. This is given as an alternative to the boot camp, and the advertising stresses the money savings for skipping the actual camp and doing the study and preparation at home. The costs of the boot camps are rather high, especially when they include transportation, lodging, and meals. Even though, in most cases, employers will pay for the cost of the camp, this is not always the case.

The Microsoft Certification boot camp has several benefits over home study and they justify the cost. Most camps offer success guarantees. If you fail an examination, the instructors are right there to correct any mistakes and identify the cause of failure. You will be prepared to retake the examination and get back on schedule. Since most boot camps have small classes and therefore a high instructor to student ratio, this individual attention is the key to successful completion of the Certification exams. Many of the camps have as high as 96% success rates, and many will allow credits to any student who does fail the complete the course. These credits may be used to retake the boot camp at a reduced rate at a later date.

What Are Requirements of Possessing & Using the MCSE Exam Vouchers?

Planning for success on the CCNA, CCNP, and other Cisco exams is much like taking a trip in your car. You've got to plan ahead, accept the occasional detour, and just keep on going until you get there. But what do you do before you get started?

Create a road map - for success.

If you were driving from one side of the country to another, you certainly wouldn't just get in your car and start driving, would you? No. You would plan the trip out ahead of time. What would happen if you just got in the car and started driving in the hope that you would someday arrive at your final destination? You would never get there, and you'd spend a lot of time wandering aimlessly.

Don't spend your study time and slow your progress by studying for a Cisco exam without planning the trip. Schedule your study time as you would an appointment with a client, and keep that appointment. Make sure that your study time is quality study - turn your TV, iPod, and cell off. If you hit a bump in the road and don't get your certification the first time you take the exam, regroup and create another plan. Study until you get to the point that on exam day, you know that you are already a CCNA or CCNP and you're just there at the testing center to make it official.

The journey to success is not a straight line. When you look at a chart that shows a company's financial progress, the line never goes straight up. there are some ups and downs, but the overall result is success. The path to your eventual career and certification exam success may not be a direct one, but the important part is to get started - and to get any journey started, you've got to create a road map for a successful arrival at your destination.

Tips for Preparing for MCSE Certification Exams

It's a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer's job to design and create business platforms on Windows server systems. Certified professionals working with Microsoft platforms have access to an assortment of online tools, ranging from official logos to transcripts. Most importantly, they can have access to their very own landing page hosted by Microsoft. In order to get started with this rewarding occupation, however, they'll have to study a good MCSE training course.

This is because this type of work isn't easy. As such, a number of exams are given out to potentials hoping to becoming a Certified professional with Microsoft. Most of the exams test the students on the core requirements, and the other exams are elective.

A good MCSE CBT course can help students prepare before examination time. The exams, especially the core ones, consist of questions about Windows, operating systems, networking, and so forth. The total examination, needless to say, can be quite long. As such, students need to prepare a great deal before taking the examination. They can do by taking a MCSE training course.

Fortunately, while long, the test really isn't that hard, just as long as the students familiarize themselves with Microsoft Certified Systems. There are also free MCSE practice tests, tips, resources, notes, and more---online. These free resources along with MCSE CBT courses give students all the knowledge they need for passing the examination and receiving their MCSE certifications.

Networking and interacting with one another as well as professionals is a great way for students to receive help and advice. The internet is filled with forums and blogs for which beginners can ask for advice from Microsoft Certified professionals. Beginners need to ask for recommendations in the first place before selecting MCSE training course.

Some of the courses are a waste of time and money, since students don't learn a thing with them and end up failing the examination. Some MCSE CBT courses and online classes, however, are well worthwhile and very comprehensive. They don't have to be expensive, either. In fact, some companies will even pay for their employee's computer based training and certification. The ones who don't have that luxury, though, need to make sure they find a course that is affordable, but not cheap. They can then get started on the MCSE training course and, if all goes well, pass the examination that will make them a Microsoft Certified System's Engineer!
